SECURITY is being stepped up to combat marine theft around the Teign estuary.

The harbour commission are collaborating with Datatag to promote an electronic security identification system for outboard motors.

And the Teign Estuary Coastal Partnership is also taking part, by offering four free kits each to the Teign Corinthian Yacht Club, Shaldon Sailing Club, Shaldon Boat Owners Association, Teignmouth Boat Owners Association, and the South Devon Water Ski Club.

Teignbridge councillor Humphrey Clemens said the estuary partnership was delighted to be working alongside the harbour commission to help combat marine crime.

‘We would encourage any boat owner who is not a member of one of the participating clubs to register their outboard .’

Datatag were in attendance at the RNLI open day event on August 6/7th at Teignmouth station giving advice and assisting with installations.

Cmdr David Vaughan, the Teignmouth harbourmaster said: ‘Along with the initiatives on the commission’s website, and warning signs around the estuary, this is another way to combat the outboard engine thefts that were prevalent around the coast at this time of the year.'

‘I hope that all marine property is marked or secured in such a way as to make it difficult for thieves to take things from boats on the water.'

‘We do have CCTV cameras around the harbour, but thieves tend to strike during the hours of darkness when cameras are not at their best, and other forms of thief deterrence are required.’
